“Hide and Seek” by Iulia Toader, a painting exhibition at Intercontinental Hotel of Bucharest, Intermezzo Lobby Bar, 1 Nov- 28 Nov, 2018. The exhibition is a story in pool and acrylic about childhood , a story of love, time and ephemeral beauty.
“Hide and seek”is such a familiar game for all children; scientific speaking, it looks like a behavioral coaching for facing or experiencing the adult world.
Adult human beings belong to complex social systems where ideas, characters, desires, all phenomena of existence, are all pieces in an apparently chaotic game, but with a clear causality, a universe in itself, a game where all phenomena– our perception about objects- and noumena– the object itself- are hiding and constantly revealed.
“I believe that the beauty of the game resides in that that hiding, mystifying, is a necessary pre-conditioning of finding truth, of revealing” says Artist Iulia Toader.
As an art work, childhood is always a phenomenological reflection of the inner world of the adult observer.A universe that is intentionally evanescent and peaceful, but which at a closer look, hides imminent danger. We are all prisoners in this universe, our own childhood, our children’s’, and it really is the mirror of our own spiritual existence.
In her second exhibition with Renaissance Art Gallery and in partnership with InterContinental Bucharest and OZB Magazine, Iulia’s collection of childhood paintings reveals the artist belief that the universe of childhood is always an artwork in itself, being perceived through the adult eyes, and never directly by the children, as they are in a continuous alpha state, that is evanishing when they are starting to grow up.
‘I am happy to organize this first launching event in partnership with Renaissance Art Gallery and OZB Magazine, especially because this proves that Intermezzo Lobby Lounge became a trustworthy art stage for young talented artists, a space for quality gatherings in the heart of Bucharest, considering this is the fifth exhibition since we opened this chic spot in our hotel lobby.’ stated Lior Bebera, General Manager at the InterContinental Bucharest.
„, the motto of the Renaissance Art Gallery comes more and more to life with this new exhibition and the empowerment of yet another talented lady, Iulia Toader, who reveals her passion and personality, in a reflection of the chilhood universe mirroring her own soul”, said Oana Visoiu, the owner of Renaissance Art Gallery.
After the storm breaks, consumes and finally ends, a state of serenity takes its space. Phenomenology would describe the way I, the individual, experience the falling to grace just as violent as falling from grace. But describing floating as opposed to falling, we couldn’t use no direction, only the sensation and the anticipation of a possible dangerous falling. That’s where faith intervenes and turns upside down all meanings, serenity becomes dangerous, falling becomes freedom.
SOLD_ Golden Hour
SOLD_ “The Golden Hour” – acrylic on canvas, 80x80cm.
The golden hour is the” few seconds” just before all the light disappears and the darkness of the night veils the world. The magic of it is that darkness is there, but without the connotation of romanticism, sadness, evil or fear, all gone. The levity of darkness. Very similar to that age of boys we were or boys we know, when they have still the few drops of childish innocence, just before they lose it and the manhood triumphs, hiding a glimpse of that light inside.

This is a pair for the Golden Hour, the opposite of it; I tried to represent the crisp light and emotion of the first bath in the sea early in the morning. The girls live the process of hiding their childhood inside in a different way, a certain kind of awareness wakes up in them, and they become, most of them, powerful, but it is a power of a fragile kind. Like the power of light, so easily switched off. I am really fascinated by the turning of girls, a baby-girl, hidden in a girl, hidden in a teen, hidden in every woman. I can see there the beauty of the Russian dolls.
SOLD_5_DSO_Dark Morpho
“DSO-Dark Morpho” - oil on canvas 80x100cm
DSO is an acronym for deep space objects. They are objects in the universe that cannot be defined as planets, galaxies or stars. They are each unique and unexpected creations found at the edge of the explored universe. For me DSO stands for “deep soul objects”. They are undefinable emotions hidden inside of the soul. Watching games and plays of children, I can detect these feelings, so hard to explain but by a mix of happiness, danger, innocence and aggressiveness. Grace and awkwardness together.
6_DSO Bloody Jubatus
“DSO-Bloody Jubatus” - oil on canvas 80c100cm
DSO is an acronym for deep sky objects. They are objects in the universe that cannot be defined as planets, or solar systems. They are each unique and unexpected creations found at the edge of the explored universe. For me DSO stands for “deep soul objects”. They are undefinable emotions hidden inside of the soul. Children play by hiding themselves in imaginary worlds populated by creatures they can only meet there. Like dangerous or exotic animals. All this is a preparation for the adult life where they meet their beasts materialized like strong emotions: extreme happiness, falling in love, grieving for death.
7_Nymphet
“Nymphet” - 60x80cm oil on canvas.
This is a painting inspired by the famous book of Nabokov. Expressing the lost little girl inside the soul of a grown woman. Watched through the eyes of innocence, the maturity is stiff and unforgiving. If only we were allowed to live by the standards of childhood, in an alpha state where we could be in more places in space at the same time. Maturity is ruthless, in spite of our many games, we as adults lose the ability to seek and get better at the ability to hide, with the risk of never being found.
