Artist Biography

Ramona Pintea is a Romanian-born contemporary artist with an international exhibition history and works held in private collections across 24 countries.

Known for her commanding figurative paintings, bold color and expressive visual language, she has developed a distinctive practice exploring identity, human presence, strength and vulnerability. Her work has been exhibited across Europe and the United States, from London, Miami and Washington, D.C. to Bucharest, and is represented in the collection of the Hellenic Museum of Michigan.

Pintea grew up in Brașov, Romania, and moved to London in 1991, where she studied Fine Art at the College of North East London and Fashion Design at London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London. Her background across fine art, fashion and design shaped a strong instinct for color, scale and composition that remains fundamental to her work.

At the heart of Pintea’s career is Urban Queen, the body of work that established one of the defining signatures of her practice. These paintings place contemporary women at the centre of the canvas with a compelling physical and psychological presence. The crown, recurring throughout the series, evolved from a visual motif into a symbol of self-possession, responsibility and the authority to define one’s own place in the world. Her figures hold confidence and vulnerability, humor, sensuality and introspection in equal measure, resisting simple narratives of female strength.

In 2022, the ideas developed through Urban Queen expanded beyond the canvas with the launch of the #WearYourCrown❤️ Global Campaign in Washington, D.C. on International Women’s Day. Pintea is co-creator of the campaign, which developed internationally through exhibitions, collaborations and two large-scale murals in London. The crown moved beyond its role within the paintings to become the visual language of a wider conversation around self-recognition, visibility and female leadership.

In 2026, Pintea was invited by the curator of #WeAreGreekWarriors — Women Who Shaped the Greek War of Independence to create the body of paintings for the exhibition. Through a contemporary visual language, she reinterpreted historical women associated with the Greek struggle for independence, bringing portraiture, history and cultural memory into dialogue. Her work is now represented in the collection of the Hellenic Museum of Michigan.

Pintea’s recent work marks a further evolution of her practice. While the human figure remains central, her paintings increasingly explore the relationship between people and the environments they create and inhabit. Architecture, nature and technology enter the work as elements of a changing contemporary landscape, raising questions around progress, connection and our place within the natural world.

Working primarily in painting and mixed media, Pintea brings together saturated colour, expressive mark-making, layered surfaces and passages of abstraction with carefully observed figurative elements. Her compositions often operate between control and spontaneity, allowing recognizable forms to emerge from, and occasionally dissolve into, the physicality of paint. Scale and color give the work its immediate presence; texture, gesture and detail reveal themselves more gradually.

Across an established and continually evolving practice, Pintea has retained the human figure as her central territory while expanding the questions that surround it. Her paintings are grounded in the complexity of human experience and in the conviction that strength and vulnerability can occupy the same space.

Ramona Pintea lives and works in Bucharest, Romania.
